Standing tall

We paid the price for not taking our chances in the previous games against Namdhari XI and Mumbai Customs,” is how Air India North coach Harendra Singh analysed his team’s 2-2 draw against Army XI yesterday. The result sent North crashing out of the 46th Bombay Gold Cup. On the other hand Army XI now look forward to their last four clash against Air India on Friday.

If the North players were guilty of not scoring more goals in their first two games, Army goalkeeper P Thirumala Rao was the one who put paid to their chances in the key clash yesterday. Both teams finished with seven points apiece but Army topped Pool B on account of a better goal difference.

“We have done well against Air India North previously so I was confident we could pull it off today as well,” said Rao after his impressive performance. He was at his best particularly in the first half when he brought about four good saves.

The 29-year-old havaldar also credited his teammates for his side’s fight-back. “We didn’t lose hope till the end and that shows the character of the boys,” he added. Army XI came back twice to draw level in the 67th minute of the game. Rao who was adjudged best goalkeeper in the 2005 Gold Cup was also part of the Bangalore Lions PHL squad 2005 and 06.

He is confident of a similar performance when they take on Air India. “They are a good side but, I feel we can win against them too.” About the impending threat from drag-flicker Len Aiyappa in the semis, Rao said, “I have played against him on many occasions so I know his game. Let’s see how things unfold.”

Air India North had taken the lead in the 9th minute after Dhanraj Pillay’s magnificent sprint into the striking circle. Having beaten three defenders, Pillay crossed the ball to Sandeep Michael. Michael then passed to the unmarked Sameer Dad who merely had to deflect the ball into the net.

Army XI fought back to level in the 23rd minute as skipper Dhananjay Mahadik converted a penalty corner. Sandeep Singh scored North’s second goal through a ferocious drag-flick in the 43rd minute. Having gone into the lead North became defensive but that didn’t help as Mansid Bhengra found the all-important goal for Army in the dying stages of the game.
